Artist in Studio Project

Posted on 31/01/2012

Back when I was the photographer for H Magazine I started started photographing artists in their studios.  The portraits would run each month alongside a short article about the artist and a notice of their upcoming shows.  It was always a great deal of fun and usually an interesting challenge.  Environmental portraiture is challenging and rewarding in equal parts and over the course of this series I learned a lot about how to visualise a space and use the camera to situate a subject there so that the space both contains and explains them.  I also got to hang out with a lot of very interesting people.

I'm happy to say that this project has been revived with help from Dave Kuruc and that we are undertaking a new series of portraits of the city's artists and, hopefully, collecting them all in some sort of formal way such as a book or a gallery show.
